🇨🇦 Why Alberta Should Declare December as Christian Heritage Month
Premier Danielle Smith,
We had the honour of meeting you at the Calgary Prayer Breakfast in 2024, and we remain confident that you and your government will respond positively to our request.
Alberta already recognizes several heritage and faith observances, including:
 • Sikh Heritage Month (April)
 • Hindu Heritage Month (November)
 • Islamic Heritage Month (October)
These recognitions reflect Alberta’s strong commitment to diversity, inclusion, and respect for all faith communities.
Many municipalities across Alberta have already declared December as Christian Heritage Month, recognizing the deep and positive influence of Christian faith, values, and service on their local communities.
Now is the time for the Province of Alberta to take the next step and declare December as Christian Heritage Month — not as a temporary or annual proclamation, but through a formal motion ensuring permanent recognition of Christianity’s enduring impact on Alberta’s moral, cultural, and social foundations.
Across Canada, this historic movement continues to grow. Nearly 60 municipalities, three regional governments, and the province of Saskatchewan have already declared December as Christian Heritage Month. Christians from all denominations — Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant — have united in this national effort, standing together in faith and gratitude.
Christian Heritage Month is about acknowledging truth — that the Christian values of compassion, service, and community have profoundly shaped this province and continue to guide and inspire Alberta today.
It’s also about celebrating diversity and inclusion. Nearly 48% of Albertans identify as Christians, representing every culture, ethnicity, and background — a living example of how faith and unity continue to strengthen our province.
Premier Smith, Alberta has a defining opportunity to lead once again — to honour its Christian roots, celebrate its faith-based diversity, and reaffirm the Christian heritage that helped build our great nation.
This is not about division — it’s about recognition, equality, and enduring gratitude.
With blessings and respect,
Molly & Jay Banerjei
